Funding applications

Grant and other funding programs can sometimes be hard to find, hard to understand and challenging to apply for. Frankly, it can sometimes be overwhelming if it is not what you are familiar with.

If you are considering applying for funding from a not-for-profit, private, State or Federal government body I can help.

I have 20 years’ experience working in government – designing, developing, implementing, assessing, awarding, and overseeing grant programs in sport and the arts. I also have experience as a grant applicant to a variety of different state and federal programs with a high success rate. In addition, I am an author or co-author of a wide range of publications that support project planning such as:

The basic principles within these publications, though originally written for the sport and recreation sector, are applicable across disciplines.

Project advisory services

I have overseen thousands of projects over the past 40 years, in the private and public sectors including research, policy development, grant programs and infrastructure delivery.

As an Executive Director within the Western Australian state government for 15 years I led teams to deliver major reforms and key projects. Some key projects delivered include:

In the private sector I led teams that delivered key projects for property owners and in the creation of The Vines Resort.

Project advisory services provides you with additional support because nobody will know your project as well as you do. In complementing the skill set of you and your team I can assist you to manage the workload and support you to deliver a great outcome.

Business case reviews

I have commissioned a diverse range of business cases over the past twenty years and reviewed hundreds of business cases submitted to me for our own grant programs.

It is important that your business case provides a clear and compelling rationale as to:

As a business owner, administrator, director, or grant applicant we can sometimes find it challenging to think objectively about what it is we want to do.

That is where working with a third-party can assist you to tease out the key points your submission should focus on, ensure that the options analysis is realistic, and the proposal is sound and compelling to a grant assessor.

Regardless of where you are at in your journey, I am confident that I can assist you.

Facility management and infrastructure consulting

I have extensive experience in the planning and delivery of public and private infrastructure projects over a 40-year career and in the management of infrastructure, including housing, a golf resort, the State Library of Western Australia, Recreation Camps, and office accommodation.

I was, proudly, the first Western Australian endorsed as a practicing facility manager by the Australian peak body, the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA), in 2001.

I was also a member of the inaugural WA State Facility Management branch committee, a member of an environmental committee and undertook FMA training to function as a mentor. I contributed 10 years to the Housing Industry Association on committees, particularly the Documentation committee.

Managing facilities/infrastructure is a vital, complex, and challenging task yet also extremely rewarding. Maintaining efficient, compliant, and sustainable buildings that enable society to operate in a safe manner and with minimal impact on climate and the environment remains a key role in any organisation.

I also have experience at Board level in the state government and not-for-profit sector.

If you need assistance in managing your infrastructure reach out and see if I can help.

Strategic advice

Are you thinking about developing a strategic plan or updating the one you have?

Need an independent, unbiased perspective to help you achieve your best outcome?

Looking for a promotion or a new role and need to demonstrate your strategic thinking capability?

Wondering what trends and disruptors are applicable or coming down the line?

I have 40 years’ experience in the private, not-for-profit, and public sectors, including at Executive and Board level and have participated in many strategic planning sessions and discussions. I also have a strong interest in technology, how it can affect and assist our lives, cross-cutting topics and how they impact organisations (i.e. well-being, health, climate) even though they may emerge in other sectors.

Strategy is imperfect, the word around us is constantly changing (often rapidly) so we need to be flexible and adaptive. Creating frameworks and systems that allow you to move quickly are fundamental to a strong organisation.

Policy reviews

Are you developing a policy, procedure, guideline and wondering if you’ve covered everything you should?

Are you wondering whether it can be made more concise or whether it will make sense to a reader not familiar with the topic matter?

Are you unsure if the document should relate to another one in your policy suite?

With extensive experience in the private and public sectors I have been both a creator and reviewer of a diverse range of these types of documents.

I can help you develop or review your documents, so they meet the needs of your organisation, are readable and where necessary consider compliance with relevant legislation.

Staff coaching

I have managed hundreds of people over my career and always taken a mentoring/coaching approach to the role. Good succession planning is based on developing people to take your role and giving them opportunities to shine.

Sometimes, employees need to talk to an independent person outside the walls of the organisation to grow their knowledge base and skillset. Sometimes, as a Board, you might be contemplating who can assist your CEO to navigate their way through the system and excel in the role.

I love talking to people and helping them become the best they can be, I can be that outside contact for you and your organisation.

Executive leave relief

Over a 40-year career in the private and public sectors, managing large numbers of staff and multiple projects/initiatives with competing deadlines and limited resources I understand how challenging it can be to take leave. You often feel you cannot take it, yet we all know refreshing your mind and body is essential to your wellbeing and performance.

If you need someone to assist you to keep the ship on course while you take a much-needed break, however short or long that may be, I can help you.
